Oceanfront Family Haven
Alka Pool
The Project
At the front entry of the house, a welcoming water feature greets the guests. Two reflective pools on either side of the walkway bring a sense of peace to the entrance. White lights above the walkway highlight the flow of the water and the sense of tranquility. The use of large pebbles fits with the home’s color scheme of blue and grey, almost like a rock-lined lake. Lending a natural element that blends the man-made with nature.
The homeowners have a very close bond with their family. Reflected through the front entry window of the house is a painting commissioned with 11 children to represent the 11 grandchildren of the owners. They wanted to create a space that would keep their children and grandchildren visiting; having separate areas that are still part of one whole means the entire family can play or visit in the same space, keeping everyone together.
Flowing naturally from the tranquil entry, the gentle sound of water continues through the home, creating a subtle connection between the front feature and the infinity pool beyond. The reflective pools at the entrance set the tone for the entire property—calm, balanced, and harmonious—while the infinity pool at the back echoes that same serenity on a grander scale. This continuity of water elements draws the eye and spirit from the front door through to the ocean view, uniting the spaces in a seamless experience that embodies both welcome and retreat.
This gorgeous beachfront property was originally designed with a full lawn expanse. However, as the house was being built, both the owner and designer knew that a pool would be the perfect fit. It would offer a family gathering place for their many children and grandchildren, as well as luxury comforts for lounging and relaxing.
The clever part of this design is the many functional mini spaces that cohesively fit together. From within the house, a cheerfully inviting exercise room features nano doors to enjoy the incredible view over the infinity edge pool. This inspiring vista makes exercising appealing even when the elements tend to keep one indoors. A covered alcove in front of the exercise room keeps one sheltered yet still able to enjoy late night fireside chats with its overhead heating and comfy chairs. The placement of the fire pit next to the pool shows the flames dancing across the water, a mesmerizing effect.
Further down, the U-shaped pool has a unique children’s swim area on one side featuring a shallow swim lane. On the sun terrace, which is strategically placed between the main pool and kids’ area, one can beat the heat while lounging under the umbrellas. The main pool area has a lounging ledge, also known as a Baja shelf, at 12” depth, then an underwater bench at 18” depth followed lastly to a swim space at 4’0” depth.
Like a luxury resort, this lush outdoor living space boasts not only a gorgeous infinity pool but a natural transition from the house to the beach. To tie both these spaces together, a neutral palette in a tranquil theme was used throughout the décor. Dorian grey glass tile in the swimming pool creates a subtle blue hue to the water, a perfect complement to the tones in the patio and surrounding beach. Though one feels like they are one with nature in this outdoor living space, modern comfort and convenience are included, such as the automated pool chemistry and overhead heating.
This is the second residence of the owners that we have had the pleasure of working on, a summer staycation home in beautiful Madeira Park. To read more about their other West Coast property, visit: Beachfront Retreat.
