West Coast Exercise Pool
Alka Pool
The Project
Anchored on the hillside with views to the trees and sky, this exercise pool is designed as a daily swim lane for an active West Coast lifestyle. Its streamlined form, integrated spa, and seamless connection to the outdoor living areas make it as much a wellness space as a gathering place—ideal for morning laps, post-hike soaks, and year‑round enjoyment in the temperate coastal climate.
This contemporary exercise pool is finished in 1×1 glass River Rock tile, giving the basin a subtly textured, luminous floor that shifts tone with the light throughout the day. At one end, an inset whirlpool shares the same tile palette, creating a cohesive wellness zone where soaking and swimming seamlessly coexist. White LED lighting animates the water after dark, sharpening the reflections of the surrounding trees and glazing the house façade with a soft, spa-like glow.
The pool is configured with a sports-court depth profile, at 4’0″ at both ends and 5’6″ at center, offering a versatile water level that is comfortable for play, exercise, and casual standing. At 40’0″ in length, the pool offers an ideal distance for the fitness‑savvy homeowner, providing ample room for focused lap training without overwhelming the outdoor space. A dedicated racing lane in black and suede grey 2×2 porcelain tile runs the full length of the pool, giving serious swimmers a defined line of sight while keeping the aesthetic minimal and refined.
A Hydramatic automatic cover is integrated into the pool edge, allowing the water surface to be secured at the turn of a key while preserving the sleek, low-profile deck line. When closed, the cover helps maintain water temperature and provides an added layer of safety; when open, the mechanism disappears, leaving the focus on the uninterrupted tile surface and the sharp inner edge of the lane and whirlpool outlines. The soft grey tones of both the pool cover and deck pavers echo the suede grey pool tile, tying water and hardscape together into one continuous outdoor living space.
Tucked directly beneath the pool, a dedicated concrete equipment room houses the filtration, heating, and control systems in a clean, serviceable layout. This below‑grade location keeps operational noise and visual clutter out of sight, while providing easy access for maintenance and preserving the calm, architectural lines of the swim terrace above.
Architecturally, the pool is aligned with the long glass façade of the home so that interior living spaces open directly onto the deck, blurring the threshold between inside and out. Floor-to-ceiling windows and upper-level terraces overlook the water, making the pool a central design element rather than an add-on—its strong rectilinear form mirrors the home’s horizontal rooflines and expansive glazing. The result is a restrained, modern waterscape where daily swim training, relaxation in the whirlpool, and outdoor entertaining all feel integrated into the overall architecture of the home.
